Abstract:

This accessible and well-argued study delivers what is promised in the sub-title: starting with the Pentateuch, and also examining other early Jewish texts, Lange develops the thesis that in the Sinai covenant the Lord unilaterally bound himself in an unbreakable relationship with his people. The covenant links obedience to blessing, and disobedience to a curse, but there is always a promise of restoration which guarantees the covenant. Lange works his way through the Pentateuch and surveys a range of early Jewish writings in establishing a high level of continuity between the covenant with Abraham, the Sinai covenant and the promised new covenant. He also shows how the language of covenantal relationship evokes the covenant, even if ‘covenant’ is not explicitly mentioned. Building effectively on this analysis, Lange devotes the second half of the book to Rom. 9–11, arguing that the Sinai covenant is the basis for Paul’s hope that Israel as a nation will be saved. The book lacks two things: the first is an index; the second is an analysis of all the negative things Paul says about the law in Galatians and the ministry of death and condemnation in 2 Cor. 3. Such texts have the potential to challenge Lange’s otherwise persuasive attempt to place Paul on a trajectory of Jewish interpretation which sees the Sinai covenant as securing God’s covenant relationship with Israel. But as Lange himself points out, his study shows that there is scope for more study on the theme of ‘covenant’ in Paul’s letters.
